  • Lasers change materials

Anyone who uses lasers to machine parts must be aware that the high-intensity light source used to generate the laser beam is very hot and can melt metal in milliseconds. As a result, any part machined with a laser will be exposed to extreme heat and will have a heat affected zone (HAZ) along the cut edge.

For almost all manufacturers, this HAZ is not an issue, but in some areas, such as aerospace, it can be a serious problem. Critical components in these industries are often not laser cut because the design engineer cannot risk the metal forming micro cracks that could cause problems in the future.

 

  • Benefits of Laser cutting

Once a fiber laser is used for cutting, the tissue will never go back to traditional techniques. These are typically much slower, involve expensive tooling costs, can be difficult to cut very thick materials, and often require lengthy process setup times. Fiber laser cutting processes typically consume less energy and waste less material than traditional cutting techniques, and therefore can be a real part of reducing a tissue's carbon footprint.

The entire process is non-contact, which in itself has multiple benefits. These include reduced downtime and increased profits due to reduced risk of personal injury, no "wear and tear" of moving parts and no material damage due to contact.
